Sniper

A sniper is a military sharpshooter, who picks off enemy personnel at long range. Training for the modern sniper is rigorous. The equipment is cutting-edge military technology, making a sniper deadly at very long range. There have been sharpshooters for as long as guns have been used. Rifles came into use in the 1700s, with rifled muskets common on the American colonial frontier. In a rifle, the inside of the gun barrel is grooved which imparts a spin to the bullet, increasing range and accuracy. One of the first rifles was the famed Pennsylvania rifle (also called the Kentucky rifle) invented in the middle 1700s. It had a slow rate of fire, but shooting from cover, colonial shooters were formidable. In the Revolution, American riflemen became deadly effective at picking off British and Hessian officers. In the American Civil War, snipers began to be equipped with telescopic sights and became even more deadly. Some snipers have killed large numbers of the enemy. The Finnish sniper Simo Hayha killed 505 enemies when the Red Army invaded Finland in 1940. Several women became famed snipers during World War 2. Lyudmilla Pavlichenko is credited with killing 309 German invaders. Chris Kyle of the US Navy Seals had 160 confirmed kills.
